What’s happening in the job market?

Our upcoming product Työmarkkinadata is pulling in data from 441,000 companies across industries, tracking job trends and hiring patterns. We’re still fine-tuning what insights are the most useful, but here’s what’s standing out so far.

Where are the English-speaking jobs?

The industries hiring the most English-speaking workers right now:

  • Restaurants and hospitality
  • Property maintenance
  • Social services
  • Engineering
  • Various positions through staffing services

A lot of the jobs in recruitment and staffing services aren’t actually long-term roles - they’re temp or part-time positions. That might mean companies are hesitant to commit to full-time hires, keeping things flexible instead.

Spoken vs. written language: what matters more?

Spoken language skills are prioritized over written skills, both for English and Finnish. Employers seem to care more about whether someone can communicate in real-time rather than write perfectly structured emails.

Finnish language expectations

For roles that require Finnish, the most common levels listed are C1 or B2. That’s relatively high, but it still means opportunities exist for those who aren’t fully fluent but can operate at an intermediate level.

What this tells us about the job market

The dominance of temp jobs suggests companies are playing it safe, using staffing services rather than committing to full-time hires. The market might still be uncertain, and businesses are keeping their options open.

For job seekers, flexibility is key. Looking at short-term, project-based, or staffing agency roles might open up more opportunities.

What’s next?

As we develop the platform further, upcoming deep dives will explore:

  • How job availability differs across regions.
  • Career paths for English-speaking professionals in Finland.
  • Which skills and qualifications are most in demand.

If you're an employer, educator, or policymaker and have specific data needs, let’s talk. More insights coming soon.
